STATE HOTEL LEONORA

The State Hotel is one of only four remaining in the State of Western Australia and managed by the Shire of Leonora.

Hocking Heritage + Architecture has been providing ongoing heritage advice to the Shire of Leonora continuously for the last 8 years. As a town built up on the fortunes of gold, the stories associated with the site and the remaining infrastructure related to the early mining operations of the town are invaluable reminder of the past that also quite uniquely have relevancy in the modern context as mines continue to operate in the town. The Shire is the custodian of the state heritage listed assets and responsible for the maintenance of these places and community and public access to them.

Our services have included the assessment of heritage values of numerous places managed by the Shire of Leonora and by other owners in connection with the acquisition of heritage places by the Shire, documenting conservation and restoration works and engaging with the Aboriginal community. Assessment of each place was measured against the provisions of the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990 and the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter.

Hocking Heritage +Architecture has worked diligently to create good working relationships between the Shire of Leonora staff and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

The efforts of the Shire to appropriately manage their heritage places was recognised by the Heritage Council of Western Australia and the Shire received the 2019 Heritage award to Shire of Leonora for commitment to conservation work.

Thank you to The West Australian digital for the feature.
